Biographical / Historical

The Custer Freight Road is a now abandoned road originally constructed by the Department of Army after the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Construction began in ca. 1877/1878 in Fort Keogh (near Miles City) in order to transfer materials to Fort Custer (near Hardin). The road remained in use by the army until 1884 when the Northern Pacific Railroad was built. By 1899, Fort Custer was abandoned. The Custer Freight trail remained in use by both the US Army and Native Americans, particularly near the Lame Deer and Rosebud Creek areas until approximately 1910.
