Fisk Family Papers

The Fisk Family gained prominence in Montana as emigrant guides and prominent newspapermen. Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs. Topics presented include the Civil War, the Fisk expeditions of the 1860s, newspaper publishing in Helena, Montana, local politics, and pioneer life.

The Fortnightly Club was founded by Mrs. Frances W. Wickes to study English literature. It was the first organization in Montana to function as a literary circle. The collection (1890-2015) consists of incoming correspondence, financial records, minutes, organizational records, miscellany, attendance records, outlines of study, programs, histories of the club, a developing scrapbook, and clippings.

Lewis Penwell (1869-1948) was a Helena, Montana, attorney, politician, and sheep rancher active in the Northwest Development League and the Western Governors' Special Tour of 1911. John Shober (1832-1925) was a Helena, Montana, miner, attorney, and state legislator. Collection (1832-1952) includes descriptions of frontier social and mining conditions. He managed the Whitlach-Union, Spring Hill, Eclipse-Argo, and Gould mines; worked for Canoll and Martin; and served as a consultant to William A. Clark in his Colusa Parrott law suit and his purchase of the Rosario Mine in Mexico. Collection (1878-1909) includes correspondence, financial records, legal documents, diaries, scrapbooks, clippings, and notebooks.
