Content Description

This collection consists of a photograph (1942) of Raymond Bernard Hieta, a War Department Embarkation Army Post Office Form (1943), Hieta’s undated Army Class “A” Pass, an undated Egyptian postage stamp and Japanese military ephemera, and a postcard (1947) from Hieta to his mother Anna. Biographical materials compiled by the processing archivist are also included in the collection.

Biographical / Historical

Raymond Bernard Hieta was born March 18, 1913, in Butte, Montana, to Charles B. and Anna Mullenberg Hieta. At the age of five, his family moved to Elliston, Montana, where he attended school. As a teenager, Hieta attended Powell County High School in Deer Lodge, Montana. After graduating high school, Hieta would go on to work for the Forest Service. In 1942, Hieta joined the U.S. Army and served in the European theater (particularly in Italy and Eastern Europe) of World War II. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Hieta returned to Elliston. In 1954, Hieta married Fannie Melida Untinen. Hieta worked in Garrison, Montana, as a payroll clerk for the Cominco-American Company. In 1990, Hieta passed away at the age of 77. He was survived by his wife and several relatives.
