Biographical Note:
Freda Augusta Rehder was born on a ranch near Roundup, Montana, on November 16, 1907. She attended elementary school in county rural schools and high school at Riggs Institute in Flandreau, South Dakota. She was a member of the Assiniboine Indian Tribe of Fort Peck Reservation. She married Thomas G. Beazley. Mrs. Beazley worked for the Montana Relief Commission, U.S. Employment Office, the Montana State Economic Opportunity Office, and the Small Business Administration's State Advisory Council. She was also self-employed leasing oil and gas wells and managing wheat farms. In 1947 her husband died and left her a car dealership and the Diamond T Truck business.
Mrs. Beazley was active in Native American organizations. In 1951 the Montana Inter-Tribal Policy Board was formed and she was elected its first secretary, a position she held for eight years. In 1953 she was elected vice president of the National Congress of American Indians. Ten years later Mrs. Beazley was instrumental in having the finances of this organization audited and its leadership challenged. In 1966 she was elected president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, being the first woman to hold that position. Her work in these organizations often had her testifying to congressional committees and other political bodies. She was an opponent of the construction of Knowles Dam on the Flathead Reservation. Freda Beazley died in 1982.
