Scope and Contents
This collection contains twenty daybooks (1869-1886), four customer petty ledgers (1869-1877) of Constans' Unionville store, plus several post office receipts and registers (1870-1881) as well as checks made from Constans' First National Bank account in Helena (1876-1888, 1885).

Biographical / Historical
Philip Constans was born in Deimeringen, Department du Bas Rhine, France, in 1836, the son of Philip and Christina Constans. He arrived in Last Chance Gulch, Montana Territory, on September 25, 1864, from St. Paul, Minnesota. After four years in Helena, Constans moved to the newly developing mining camp of Unionville, where he established a general store in January 1869. He also served as postmaster of Unionville for many years. Constans continued to make Unionville his home, with his wife Elizabeth, his son Alfred, and daughter Ida, until his death of cancer on Christmas Day 1902.

Abstract
Philip Constans was a Unionville, Montana Territory, merchant and postmaster. This collection consists of twenty daybooks (1869-1886), and four indexed ledgers (1869-1877) of Constans' Unionville store. Also included are several post office receipts and registers (1869-1881).
