This collection consists primarily of minutes of meetings of the Anaconda Central Labor Council. In addition, there is a small amount of general correspondence, financial records, and legal documents concerning the organization. This collection has also been microfilmed.

Biographical / Historical

In January 1897, representatives of various union locals in the Anaconda, Montana, area established the Anaconda Building Trades Congress. The purpose of this organization was to promote unity of action among area workers. Unions represented in the Congress included bricklayers, painters, carpenters, plumbers, granite cutters, and building laborers. Officers included O.B. Church, H.B. Brigham, James McKeague, and George Tucker. In January 1899, the Congress merged with the Deer Lodge County Trades and Labor Council. New unions added to the organization included butchers, cooks, barbers, tailors, and musicians. In 1901, the name was changed to Anaconda Central Labor Council. The Council continues to operate under the auspices of the AFL-CIO.

The Anaconda Central Labor Council was a combined body of representatives of various local trade unions in the Anaconda, Montana, area. The Council represented a merger of the Deer Lodge County Trades and Labor Council and the Anaconda Building Trades Congress. The collection (1899-1943) consists of general correspondence; financial records; legal documents; and minutes.
