Letter to Barney Considine from Betty Holmes, 1992
Scope and Contents
This collection (1918-2007, bulk 1918-1973) consists primarily of Winifred Considine’s diary entries (1918-1971). These entries discuss the living and working conditions of the family ranch, including detailed reports on the wellbeing, illnesses, and productivity of her garden plants and livestock (primarily cows and chickens), and on the weather. She also discusses family events, such as the birth and death of family members and the lives of her children, as well as broader global events, including brief mentions of the 1930s’ dust storms, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the launch of Sputnik in 1957. Also included are Winifred’s research files (1954-1973) on assorted plants and birds and her family’s genealogy, along with some correspondence (1965-1967; 1992), three writings, including a memoir by Barney Considine and a self-reflection essay by Winifred Considine (circa 1997; circa 1920, 1966; undated), and extensive genealogy notes gathered by Barney Considine (1928-2007; undated).
