Biographical Note
Winifred (sometimes spelled “Winnifred”) E. Considine (née Brackett), daughter of Charles Brackett and Eleanor Bates Brackett, was born on July 4, 1894, in or near Murdo, South Dakota. It was reported in her obituary that she worked as a schoolteacher in South Dakota, although according to her son, Barney Considine, she never taught classes. In December 1914, she married Martin H. Considine in Sheridon, Wyoming. Martin Considine, born in Waterloo, Iowa in 1881, worked as a farm laborer in Iowa and Nebraska, and homesteaded on Butte Creek (now in Powder River County) in Montana in 1912. Sometime prior to 1918, Winifred and Martin Considine moved near Broadus, Montana and worked as ranchers. They had five children together, Joseph Considine (born 1915), Robert Considine (born 1917), Joy Allgaier (née Considine, born 1919), Keith Considine (born 1920) and Barney Considine (born 1939). The Considines lived in a log cabin until 1951, when they moved to what Winifred later described in 1966 as a "modern" house, which had electricty installed a few years after they moved in. Martin’s younger brother, Peter (“Pete”) joined them on the ranch sometime after 1920. Pete Considine died on February 12, 1954, at the age of 64.
In addition to her extensive journalling regarding the ranch (with particular attention given to its plants, livestock, and the weather patterns), Winifred expressed an interest in horticulture, including wildflowers, garden flowers, vegetables, and other specific plants and kept several notebooks dedicated to plant research. Additionally, she kept notebooks dedicated to bird research she conducted over the years.
Martin Considine died on September 21, 1965, at the age of 83 and was cremated. Winifred Considine died on March 17, 1985 at the age of 90; she was also cremated.
