Lee Metcalf (1911-1978) served as U.S. Congressman from Montana from 1952 to 1961 and as U.S. Senator from 1961 until his death in 1978. The Montana Council of Defense was established during World War I to coordinate county war efforts. It also investigated cases of alleged disloyal activities.
