Records consist of incoming correspondence (1866-1873, 1876) to both the Helena and Virginia City offices dealing with banking transactions, gold trading, and other matters. Patrick and Company (prior to February 1888) and Jackson, Dunn and Company (from February to November 1888). Collection (1887-1889) includes correspondence; financial records, including ledgers, invoices, cash books, day books; legal documents; and miscellany.

Abstract J.H. McKnight and Company operated as the post trader at Fort Shaw, Montana Territory, from 1870 to 1887. In 1887 Joseph McKnight moved his business to Great Falls, where it became a general mercantile firm. In 1894 the name was changed to J.H.
