This collection consists of views of Montana placer mining, hard rock mines and mills, coal mines, and kilns primarily between the years 1867 – 1920. Well-represented are early views of placer mining in Alder Gulch and in the Rimini mining district, larger-scale hard rock mining in the Marysville mining district, and mines and smelters in Butte. The collection also includes views of coal mining operations in Carbon, Fergus, Gallatin, Park, Powder River, and Sheridan counties.

John T. Murphy Papers
John T. Murphy (1842-1914) was a Helena, Montana, merchant, rancher, banker, and mine investor. Collection (1865-1935) includes correspondence, financial records, legal documents and other material of Murphy, the Murphy Estate, and various companies he founded, including the Powder River Land and Cattle Company, Montana Cattle Company (Seventy-Nine Ranch), and the Murphy-Maclay Hardware Company.
Roy Douglas Pritchett papers
Roy Pritchett was a Helena, Montana, mine promoter. Papers (1944-1952) consist primarily of general correspondence from brother Glenn A. Pritchett and others regarding mine investments and development. There are also several original poems and one short story written by Pritchett.

The Royal Mining Company, originally the Royal Gold and Silver Mining Company, was located near Philipsburg, Montana. Records include correspondence (1899-1921) between company secretary W.M. Bickford and various stockholders and officers; assay reports; financial records; mining leases (1910-1921); and organizational records (1891-1912).
Frank L. Sizer papers
Frank Sizer was a Helena and Butte, Montana, mining engineer. He managed the Whitlach-Union, Spring Hill, Eclipse-Argo, and Gould mines; worked for Canoll and Martin; and served as a consultant to William A. Clark in his Colusa Parrott law suit and his purchase of the Rosario Mine in Mexico. Collection (1878-1909) includes correspondence, financial records, legal documents, diaries, scrapbooks, clippings, and notebooks.
