Abstract

Henry Clark was one of the founders of East Helena, Montana. This collection consists of outgoing correspondence (1864-1895) of Clark and other members of his family to his relatives in Iowa, including extensive comments on frontier and pioneer life in Virginia City and Helena, Montana Territory.

Walter De Lacy was a Helena, Montana, surveyor and cartographer, who worked on several government road surveys, and served as an official of the U.S. Surveyor's Office. This collection consists of general correspondence (1855-1896) discussing family matters, professional activities, and conditions in Helena, Montana.

Abstract Christian Kenck (1835-1914), a native of Germany, arrived in Helena, Montana Territory, in 1866 and operated a restaurant, the Magnolia Hotel, a saloon, a stone quarry, and four ranches. His son Joseph N. Kenck (1862-1943) was a bookkeeper at the Second National Bank of Helena; Helena city alderman; and Lewis and Clark County public administrator. Abstract

John Shober (1832-1925) was a Helena, Montana, miner, attorney, and state legislator. Collection (1832-1952) includes descriptions of frontier social and mining conditions. Included are subgroups for Shober's nephew John H. Shober, Jr., manager of a ranch near Townsend; and of his niece Harriet Shober Nolan, wife of Cornelius B. Nolan.
