Lewis Penwell family papers
Lewis Penwell (1869-1948) was a Helena, Montana, attorney, politician, and sheep rancher active in the Northwest Development League and the Western Governors' Special Tour of 1911. Papers (1883-1959) include correspondence, clippings, and miscellaneous materials of Lewis Penwell, Clare Avery Penwell, Fred Penwell, Sam Garvin, and Eva Ash Garvin.

Martha Plassmann (1850-1936) was a Montana pioneer, historian, and journalist. Collection consists of her autobiography and over 500 historical articles written for the Great Falls Tribune and the Montana News Association during the 1920s and 1930s. The articles, based on her own memories and on research, cover a wide range of topics, especially fur trappers, explorers, and vigilantes.

Poad Family papers (1870-1884) The collection consists of correspondence, mostly between Elijah and Elisha from 1870 to 1874. Miscellaneous correspondence from other Poad family members and friends up to 1884 are also included. Most letters discuss mining, including descriptions of mines in the Helena area, California, and Wisconsin. Other topics include weather, family news, and local gossip.

These Chattel Mortgages detail the tremendous growth of financing for ranches on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, the Big hole Basin, Helena Valley and other areas of Montana as shortages in European food supply accelerated the need for increased beef production from Western stock producers.
