Content Description

Clemons family papers consist mainly of correspondence between homesteaders outside Burns, MT (predominantly Hattie Stallman, nee Clemons, Harvey Clemons, and Lizzie Clemons, nee Noyes) and their family back in Whitewater, WI (predominantly Nellie Henderson, nee Clemons, and Mary Jane Ridge, nee Clemons. Also included are financial records relating to the farm, and a reminiscence from Harvey Ridge. The collection is divided into four series. The correspondence is arranged as outgoing correspondence by the name of the author. Financial records include correspondence on farm payments and check receipts. Harvey's reminiscence makes up the writing series, and a clipping announcing the foreclosure on the farm following Lizzie's death is included under clippings. Topics covers in the letters include home electricity, financial support from family, shipping of chicks and seeds each spring to Montana, care during periods of illness, the transition from horse to tractor and auto, and from railroad to auto, the effect of drought, as well as the local school. Biographical / Historical

Around 1913 Hattie Ann Stallman, nee Clemons and her husband, Charles E. Stallman, homesteaded in Eastern Montana near her twin brother, Harvey James Clemons and his wife, Lizzie [Note: the spelling of Clemons or Clemmons varied within the family and over time.] The homesteads were original served by a post office in Burns, MT but fairly early the location of their post office was changed to Savage, MT. Over her lifetime, Hattie wrote letters prolifically to her sisters, Mary Jane Ridge, and Nellie May Henderson in Whitewater, WI. Hattie's mother Sara Marinda Sherman joined her son and daughter in Montana around the time of Hattie's arrival. Correspondence from other family members also included.
