Biographical / Historical

The first Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Montana in 1864 defined the role of the county Clerk and Recorder. The Clerk was elected for a term of two years and kept the records, seals, and minutes of the board of county commissioners, was the election official for the county, and also acted as the ex officio county auditor and recorder of deeds.

Meagher County, named after Territorial Governor Thomas Francis Meagher, was created in 1867 from parts of Chouteau and Gallatin Counties. Portions of Meagher County were later taken to form Fergus, Sweet Grass, and Broadwater Counties; portions were also annexed by Cascade and Lewis and Clark Counties. White Sulphur Springs is the county seat.
