This collection consists of Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) records (1938-1983, undated) for the following local unions and cities: Kalispell HERE Local 603's correspondence, minutes, and published material (1938-1941); a membership log (1939-1947) from an unidentified local in Whitefish, MT; Laundry Workers Union Local No. 19 Great Falls Laundry and Cleaners Association agreement with Great Falls Employers' Council (1957-1958); "The Union Worker's bible" Textile Processors, et al, Local No. 25; and HERE ephemera (1958-1983).

Biographical / Historical

The Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE), which represented workers in the hospitality industry, was formed in 1890. headquartered in Washington D.C., the union organized locals across the United States. Established in the 1930s, HERE Local 603 operated in Kalispell, MT, until its merger with the Bartenders International Union Local 312 in 1950. The Laundry Union Workers Local 19, which was established in the early 1900s, operated in Great Falls, MT, until the national merger with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in 1962. Several other HERE Locals operated in Montana: Local 612 in Helena, MT; Local 101 in Great Falls, MT; and Local 427 in Missoula, MT (HERE also maintained a presence in Laurel, MT). In 2004, HERE merged with the Union of Needletrades, Industrial, and Textile Employees (UNITE) and formed UNITE HERE. UNITE HERE, which is headquartered in New York City, NY, continues to represent workers in the hospitality industry and is an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).
