Stephen J. Reardon papers
Content Description
This small collection consists of materials pertaining to Stephen J. Rearson, including correspondence (Salvation Army post cards, letter with army acquaintence) official military documents he received as a solider in World War I (draft card, honorable discharge, promotion certificate, official orders, activities of the thirty-second division, etc.), and his marriage certificate. Dates range from 1917 to 1931 with the bulk of materials created during 1917-1919.

Biographical / Historical
Stephen James Foley was born on December 25, 1888 in Boston, Massachusetts. His family died from the 1918 flu epidemic and he was sent to live at an orphanage at the age of four. He was later adopted by Frederick and Bridget Reardon. Stephen attended the Boston Latin School and received a scholarship to Harvard University. While he was at Harvard, Frederick Reardon accepted a job in Montana and moved there with his wife. Stephen shortly afterwards decided to transfer to the University of Montana. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering and went to work for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. In 1917 he was drafted into military service for the US Army during World War I. He served as a Non-Commissioned officer in France and Germany. Reardon was later sent to officer’s training school and was honorably discharged as an infantryman and promoted to Second Lieutenant in July 1918. After the war he continued working for the Anaconda Copper Mining company and married Myrtle MacKillican on April 18, 1927. They had two children, Stephen J. Reardon Jr. and Donna Reardon, who later married Edward Foley, son of Teddy the Tout. Stephen Reardon died due a stomach ulcer in August 1968.
