Abstract

This collection contains several geological surveys that took place in the Jardine-Crevasse Mountain District and Mineral Hill area. Mineral Hill Mine, located just north of Yellowstone, was mined primarily for gold and arsenic from 1923 to 1948, when operations stopped until 1988. Between 1988 and 1996, TVX Gold and other companies conducted various development and drilling projects at the mine. Since 1996, the mine has been under “maintenance status.” This collection includes geological surveys, reports, correspondence, photographs, and published materials. Dates range from 1887 to 1998, with the bulk of materials produced from 1987-1998.

Biographical / Historical

The Jardine-Crevasse Mountain district is located immediately north of Yellowstone National Park on the border of Montana and Wyoming. The mining town, Jardine, and Mineral Hill Mine are situated a few miles northwest of Gardiner, Montana. Placer gold was discovered in Jardine, previously known as Bear Gulch, as early as 1866 by “Uncle” Joe Brown. Later, in 1870, Brown and James Graham discovered gold-quartz in what became known as Mineral Hill. Operations began and ceased multiple times during the end of the 1880s and into the 20th century, often due to economic crises and later wartime demands. From 1923 to 1948, Mineral Hill Mine was mined primarily for gold and arsenic, though operations ceased in 1948 and the mine remained closed for nearly four decades. Later, in 1984, the companies Inco Limited (TVX Gold) and Homestake Mining Company (of California) entered an agreement to further develop the area. From 1988 to 1996 various development and drilling projects took place at Mineral Hill Mine. After 1996, the projects ceased and the mine has been under a “maintenance status” since then. However, several geological and environment surveys have taken place since the mine closed.
