This collection consists of materials created and collected by Boyd R. Murry (1903-1960) as president of Pioneer Local No. 443 of the Oil Workers International Union (OWIU/Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAWIU) in Laurel, MT. The collection (1942-1959) contains organizational records, financial records, correspondence, reports, and printed materials detailing the activities of the Oil Workers International Union – and its successor, the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union – the Yellowstone Democratic Club, the Montana Labor Advisory Committee, and the Montana United Labor Council.

Biographical / Historical

On July 20th, 1903, Boyd R. Murry was born in Douglas, Wyoming, to Bert and Emma (née Ballard) Murry. As a young man, Murry worked in oil fields in several western states. In 1931 Murry moved to Laurel, Montana, after securing a position as a sulphur removal worker at a local refinery owned by Farmers Union Central Exchange, Incorporated. On November 10th, 1933, Murry married Athleen Cowan in Laurel. For the remainder of his career with Farmers Union, Murry was an active member of the Pioneer Local No. 443 of the Oil Workers International Union (OWIU/Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAWIU), where he eventually served as president. Additionally, Murry served on the executive board of the Montana State AFL-CIO. Murry also held membership with the Yellowstone Democratic Club in the early 1950s. On December 14th, 1960, Murry died in a severe car accident on US highway 10. He was buried in the Robinson Cemetery near Red Lodge, Montana. He was survived by his wife, Athleen Murry, and three sons, Donald Murry, James W. Murry, and Phillip Murry.
