Content Description

This collection consists of correspondence (1908-1928) to (and on the behalf of) Andy Olin, a Finnish-born copper miner, from various individuals regarding financial disputes and property holdings. Other materials included in the collection are property deeds (1888-1914) and property plans (1888) addressed to Olin and previous owners of his land in Marysville, Montana; Lewis and Clark County tax assessments (1916) and tax receipts (1925) addressed to Olin; a dental receipt to Olin (1923), his undated address book, Olin’s life assurance policy (1927), and an unidentified directory search for Olin’s address (1931); additionally, the collection includes two unnamed and undated photographs of Olin (as well as one unidentified photograph). Collection also includes biographical material compiled by archivist.

Biographical / Historical

Born in Finland, Olin immigrated to the United States as a child. After initially living and working in Marysville, Montana, Olin moved to Butte, Montana, where he would eventually come to reside in the “East Side” of the city at 256 Mercury Street. In Butte, Olin worked as a copper miner at “The Original,” Butte’s first copper mine. After his retirement from mining, he served as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) worker. Olin lived and worked in Butte for 50 years, more than three quarters of his life. In 1936, Olin died at the age of 67 after a brief illness. He was survived by his sister in Michigan.
