George Tucker papers (1865-1869, undated) Collection consists of seven mining claim receipts from Madison County and Edgerton County, two assayer certificates from Virginia City, and eight letters including letters from George to his wife, Susan (includes listing of about 40 "leads" with claim numbers and details for each); letters to George from business partners Nathan Nye, Oscar Nye and Solon Johnson; letters between Nathan Nye and Oscar Nye; as well as an undated handwritten transcript of article from the Montana Post. Biographical / Historical

George Tucker was born in Virginia in 1921. Although his residence in 1860 and 1880 show residence in Iowa, George left his family in the mid-1860s and came to Montana as a part of the gold rush. He mined in Madison County, Jefferson County, Edgerton County (now Lewis and Clark County), and Deer Lodge County. Tucker returned to Iowa where he died in 1832.

Nathan B. Nye was born in Michigan in 1831. He and his brother moved to California in 1850 to take up mining prior to coming to Montana. In 1877 Nye owned a patent for fifty acres in Montana mining land.

Solon Johnson, an early pioneer and Milwaukee businessman, supplied wood for steamboats, speculated in real estate, and eventually moved to Nevada to speculate in mining stocks.

Condition Description

Some documents appear to have been taped as some point, but tape looks to be of archival quality. Letters also housed in mylar sheets. Typed partial transcripts of the correspondence and legal documents have been made and are included in the collection.
