Summary
Joseph W. Upshaw interview conducted March 28, 2008 in Helena, Mont. In this interview Mr. Upshaw discusses his service in the United States Army, attending basic training in Fort Lewis Washington as a member of the Montana National Guard, guard unit located at Chinook, Mont., training for jungle warfare in Australia during World War II, commanding a mortar platoon, training with fence posts to simulate mortar fire, 163rd Infantry deployment to New Guinea, friendly-fire incidents cased by malfunctioning mortar rounds, forty years of service in the military, assisting with the deployment of the 163rd to Iraq, and dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. (OH 2265).
