Biographical / Historical
Lucy Miller (née Zeigler) was born in the vicinity of Twin Bridges, Montana, on April 16th, 1868. In the 1890s, she married James Miller, a German-born immigrant who purchased several mining claims in the Rochester mining district during the short-lived gold, silver, and lead boon of 1898-1905. As a result, Mr. and Mrs. Miller moved to the city of Rochester, which at the time was the largest town in Madison County during the 1898-1905 era. In 1907, the productivity of the Rochester mining district began to wane. The Miller family, however, continued to work their claims until Mr. Miller’s death on October 27th, 1936. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Miller suffered from ill-heath and sought to sell or lease her husband’s mining properties. At this time, Miller’s sister, Seraphina Fisher, moved to Rochester to be closer to her. The two women lived roughly a quarter mile apart from one another and, since the death of Mr. Miller in 1936, they were the only residents left in Rochester. The elderly sisters struggled with water and material supply issues, but they were often aided by residents of Twin Bridges, who supplied the sisters with wood and other supplies. In 1953, at the age of 84, Lucy Miller passed away, leaving behind several sisters, nieces, and nephews. Lucy Miller’s death, according to a 1953 issue of The Madisonian Newspaper in Virginia City, Montana, marked the end of a “Golden Era” of mining in Rochester.
