Content Description

Violet Beck scrapbook (circa 1950-1979) scrapbook created by Beck, Director of Volunteers for the State Mental Hospital at Warm Springs in the1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. She mostly worked with the Grey Ladies volunteers and over the years developed this notebook related to them, which contains newspaper articles, photographs and other information.

Biographical / Historical

Violet Lucille Beck (née Vange) was born on April 17, 1917, in Anaconda, Montana to Norwegian parents. She graduated from Anaconda High School in 1934 and from Dillon Normal School in 1936 with a teaching certificate. She married Lawrence W. Beck in 1937, and together the couple had three sons. In 1953, Beck began her career at the Montana State Hospital in Warm Springs, Montana, where she collected clippings and information on her work there. Beck retired from her position as the Director of Volunteers at the Montana State Hospital in 1977 after 24 years of service.
