Content Description

James Holt papers (1930) family biography, news clippings, correspondence to James Holt from his former classmate Ben Nutts describing his teaching and living experience in Lame Deer, Montana on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Discusses teaching in a 2 room school house where he also lived. Also included is a handwritten description of James and Lucy Holt's story of leaving Missouri and homesteading in Montana in 1914 written by their grandson, Wallace Umber (undated) and a newscliping written by James Holt in 1916 to Hermitage, MO answering questions about homesteading in central Montana (no citation for news clipping).

Biographical / Historical

James Harod Holt (1868-1931) emigrated along with his wife, Lucy and duaghter, Beulah, from Missouri to Winifred, Fergus County, Montana in 1914 to homestead. After homesteading for a few years harsh weather conditions forced James to return to teaching in 1921. James passed away in Winifred on July 24, 1931 after a few years of failing health.
