Biographical / Historical

In 1947 the Montana State Entomologist was designated as the State Apiarist for the purpose of preventing the spread of contagious and infections disease among bees and apiaries. Duties included ordering the inspection, transfer, quarantine, destruction, or disinfection of contaminated hives; registration of all apiaries in Montana; prosecution of all illegally imported or purchased apiaries. The State Entomologist was located on the campus of Montana State University in Bozeman as part of the Agricultural Experiment Station. It remained in Bozeman until 1973 when the Department of Agriculture created the Apiculture Division. This Division was later dismantled and the apiary services transferred to the Technical Services Bureau. As of 1997 the Agricultural Sciences Division controls the apiary industry in Montana.
