Brothers Elijah (1831-1910) and Elisha Poad (1837-1913) were born to a mining family in Cornwall, England, and moved to the United States as young men, originally settling in Wisconsin. Elisha came to Helena, Montana, in 1866 or 1867 in pursuit of mining claims and was joined by his brother in 1885. Elisha and his son Joseph eventually built a large brick house that still stands on West Main Street.
