Biographical / Historical

The Montana Advisory Council for Indian Education (MACIE) was created in November of 1984 to promote high-quality education and equal educational opportunity for the Native American students served by the elementary and secondary education program in Montana. MACIE's purposes, as defined in their constitution, also included advising the Board of Public Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction in educational matters affecting the education of Indian students and advising in the implementation of the Indian Education Policy Statement. The Council consisted of members representative of Indian Education in Montana, selected in consultation with Indian organizations, major education organizations in which Indians participated, Indian tribes and schools attended by Indian students and adults. Each reservation in Montana was invited to nominate a member, as well as other key organizations involved in Indian education. Appointments to MACIE were made jointly by the Board of Public Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
