Interviewee discusses his spending his youth on his grandparents' ranch in Choteau, MT; attending school and graduating in 1955 from Montana State University with a degree in animal husbandry; his military experience in the 1950s beginning with his basic trainign in 1956 at Fort Ord in California and Fort Lewis in Washington state; working in a speical detachment in Spokane, WA inspecting meat for military consumption; how his military experience impacted his approach to ranching in Choteau following his service.

Biographical note

Alfred Bertram (Bert) Guthrie III was born on November 4, 1932 in Lexington, Kentucky to Harriet Larson Guthrie and A.B. (Bud) Guthrie Jr. As a child, Bert rode by rail into Choteau where he spent summers with his grandparents. Thomas O. Larson, Bert's maternal grandfather, nicknamed him Pete. Larson was Pete's greatest influence and deepened his appreciation for Montana ranching and the "whiskey ditch." Bert attended Montana State University, graduating with a B.S. in Agriculture and many fond Sigma Nu memories. In 1956, Bert enlisted in the Army where he was stationed in Spokane. Bert passed away at the age of 86 on April 19, 2019 in Choteau, MT.
