Biographical / Historical

The Interdepartmental Coordinating Committee for Women (ICCW) was established by executive order of Governor Tom Judge in 1977 to create positive change for all state employees by promoting the full participation of women in state government. Members of the ICCW consisted of one or more representatives of either gender from each state agency, appointed annually by the agency's director. Each ICCW representative was responsible for attending monthly committee meetings, participating in one sub-committee, and facilitating communication between the committee and their respective agency. The ICCW is reestablished by executive order with each new governor. In fulfilling its mission the ICCW was involved in various issues that specifically affected women in state government. These concerns included equal employment opportunities, affirmative action, day care, employee benefits, personnel policies, and training. A sub-committee was created to oversee the interests of the committee in each of these concerns. In addition, the ICCW sponsored the Take Our Daughters to Work program, in which government employees sponsored female students from local schools for one day of work. Members were also active in tracking legislation and bills and testifying at hearings on legislation that might affect women.
