Scope and Contents

The Harold and Helen Crawford papers focus on the time post World War II and span the entire length of Harold's permanent military career and subsequent civil servant career. Harold's portion of the papers consist predominantly of his military personnel records and official military correspondence while serving as a military attache for the United States Army. Helen's portion of the papers consist predominantly of correspondence with family and friends in the States documenting the various locations her husband was assigned across Europe and Asia.

Biographical Note

Harold Edward Craven was born June 22, 1912 in Prague, OK to Joseph F and Charlsie E Craven. By 1920 the family was living in Billings, MT. After graduating from Billings High School Harold attended Billings Business College before going to work as a salesman in Billings and in Washington state. In 1935 he married Helen A Crawford. In June 1942 Harold enlisted in the US Army and entered an officer candidate course to become a second lieutenant. He served in the European Theater of Operations from April 1944 to August 1948. Harold was acknowledged for his management of importance intelligence operations.

In the 1950s he worked as a Special Security Representative for the US Army in Europe and Asia. In 1955 he graduated from the US Army's Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. In 1957 he was assigend to the US Army Element. In 1959 he was assigned as Assistant Army Attache to the American Embassy at Cairo, UAR. In August 1965 after reaching the status of Lieutenant Colonel Harold Craven retired from the US Army. He continued to worked as the Assistant to the Director for Security Armed Forces Courier Service at Ft Huachuca, AZ until a Reduction in Force in March 1976 led to his retirement a few months later. Harold passed away May 25, 1978.

Helen Ada Craven (nee Crawford) was born June 28, 1912 in Billings, MT to Richard B Crawford and Lydia M Crawford. Helen often travelled with her husband on international trips and was commended in writing by a number of her husband's superiors. In 1952 she are her husband adopted a son, Michael Glen in Munich Germany (born in 1950). After her husband's passing in 1978, Helen remained in Cochise County, AZ. She passed away June 4, 1994.

Abstract

Harold and Helen Craven papers consist of materials colledted by Harold and Helen while Herald served as a US Military attache following the World War II through the 1960s. Collection includes correspondence from Helen to friends and family documenting her travels with her husband to Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Also includes employee records from the US Military documenting Harold's service.

Arrangement

Most of the family and friends correspondence is arranged by either year or location (see folders 5 and 6). Original order was maintained for this portion. The rest of the collection is arranged by series. Some material housed in oversize folder. See inventory below for more information.

Processing Information

A portion of the correspondence came to the Historical Society arranged by year and location. It appears the arrangement was made by Helen Craven. The Employee Records file marked "Personal Major Harold E. Craven" was originally bound together in a folder. Original order was maintained and as a result material may not be in chronological order.
