Biographical / Historical
The Raymond, Harrington and Company bank was organized as a private bank in Virginia City, Montana Territory, in October 1879, by Winthrop Raymond, Fayette Harrington, Amos C. Hall, and A.J. Bennett. It replaced the earlier Hussey, Dahler and Company bank. In 1884 Raymond left the firm and the name was changed to Hall, Harrington and Company. Five years later Harrington was bought out and the bank was renamed Hall and Bennett. The bank was reorganized in 1903 under a state charter as the Madison State Bank. In the early 1920s cashier Henry Hall mismanaged the funds and forced the bank into a state receivership in 1922. The receivership was eventually liquidated in 1942. Amos C. Hall was born in Eden, Vermont, in 1835 the son of Jesse and Rebecca (McLaren) Hall. In 1856 he homesteaded in Wisconsin. He later moved to Kansas where he was wounded in an attack by "border ruffians" in one of the skirmishes of "Bleeding Kansas." In 1860 he moved to Denver and in 1863 to Virginia City. He placer mined for several years before helping to establish the Raymond, Harrington and Company bank. He died February 27, 1893. Aldon Joseph Bennett was born in Deleware County, New York, in 1847 the son of Phineas and Minerva (Hakes) Bennett. He graduated from Franklin Engineering School, and worked on the Union Pacific Railroad until its completion in 1868. He then mined in Nevada before moving the Virginia City in 1870. He was a school teacher for several years and then became a bookkeeper for Henry Elling's bank in 1876. In 1879 he left the Elling bank to help found Raymond, Harrington and Company. He later became president of the Bank of Twin Bridges and of the Alder Gulch Consolidated Mining Company. He served 6 terms as mayor of Virginia City. Winthrop Raymond was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1847, the son of Daniel and Delilah (Matlock) Raymond. With his brother Hillhouse Raymond, he established a contract building supply hauling business in Virginia City in 1865. During the 1870s he had a wholesale grocery business. After selling his share of the bank, he platted the town of Sheridan. He died in 1912. Fayette Harrington was born in Quincy, Illinois, in 1843 the son of Harry and Julia (Keith) Harrington. He clerked in the Bank of Sparta in the early 1860s, before moving to Virginia City in 1864. He owned the Virginia City Waterworks and D.H.
