Scope and Contents
This collection consists of material accumulated by Hans L. Billie during his tenure as Montana's surface water rights coordinator. The collection is divided into two series. The subject files (1937-1968, undated) consist of material related to the Flathead Irrigation Project, the "Fort Belknap Indian Irrigation District", the Tongue River Project, and the Yellowstone River Compact. The miscellany 1941, 1954-1955, 1971-1973, undated) consists of lists of the decreed water rights in the various Montana counties (excluding Blaine, Carter, Daniels, Dawson, Treasure, and Wibaux) a United States Bureau of Reclamation annual project history for the Milk River Project, and various documents relating to Montana water law and rights.

Biographical Note:
Hans L. Bille was born in Bozeman, Montana, on October 27, 1910, one of five children of Hans L. and Clara Jane (White) Bille. He graduated from Gallatin County High School and from Montana State College. After his graduation, he worked for a time as a draftsman. In 1944 he was hired as an assistant engineer by the State Engineer's Office to work on the Water Resources Survey. He worked in the Billings office until the early 1950s, and then transferred to the Bozeman office. He moved to the Helena office in 1962. At the time of his retirement in 1973 he was surface rights coordinator in the Water Resources Division of the Dept. of Natural Resources and Conservation. Bille married Elizabeth Blaner in 1945. That marriage ended in divorce. In 1968 he married Janis Beck. After his retirement, the Billes moved back to his hometown of Bozeman. He died there April 9, 1998.
