Scope and Contents
The Mauck Brammer Papers include correspondence (1970-1976, undated) concerning his research and writings; writings (1972, 1976, 1978, undated) on archeological sites in the Montana City vicinity and the town of Clancy; subject files (1968-1977, undated) of materials collected concerning specific archaeological sites; and miscellany (undated) including maps of archaeological sites and a card file of research notes on a variety of topics such as Montana City, Prickly Pear, Clancy, mining laws, individuals, etc.

Biographical / Historical
Mauck Brammer was born on July 6, 1900, in West Virginia. When he was three years old his family moved to Eaton, Indiana. Brammer attended Ball State University and the University of Indiana, graduating from the latter in 1922 with a major in English. He taught English for one year at a small college in Oxford, Ohio. Brammer married Caroline Meloy of Helena, Montana. In 1924 Brammer became the managing editor of the English textbook department of the American Book Company in New York City. He retired from this firm in 1967 and moved to Helena. In collaboration with his brother-in-law Peter G. Meloy, Brammer studied the history and archeology of the area, particularly near Clancy and Montana City. Mauck Brammer died in May 1978.

Mauck Brammer was a Helena, Montana, resident and amateur archaeologist and historian. This collection includes writings, correspondence, subject files, and research notes on Clancy, Montana City, the Prickly Pear Valley area, the MacHaffie archaeological site, and mining.
