Biographical / Historical

The Havre Chamber of Commerce was established in 1928 and incorporated in 1947. The group was "organized for the purpose of advancing the economic, commercial, industrial, professional, civic, cultural and general welfare and interest of the City of Havre, Montana, and its general trade area." The Chamber is governed by a board of directors composed of fifteen elected members which holds at least one monthly meeting. An executive committee composed of the president, vice presidents, treasurer, and secretary/executive manager acts for the board between meetings handling daily routine business. The secretary/executive manager, among other duties, conducts the official correspondence of the Chamber and keeps minutes of all meetings. Membership in the Chamber is open to all businesses. The cost of membership is based on the Fair Share Investment Plan using the size, dollar value, number of employees, volume of business, and net earnings of a business to assess the amount of annual dues. In 1969 the Chamber changed its name to Havre Area Chamber of Commerce to reflect an interest in the area surrounding Havre. Throughout its history, the Havre Chamber has been involved in attracting new businesses to the area, promoting highway construction to the city, and lobbying for special projects including the Marias River Irrigation Project in 1936.
