Biographical / Historical

F. Adelaide Staves was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the 1860s. She graduated in 1881 and became a teacher of elocution. In the early 1890s she moved to Dillon, Montana, where she taught public school and, in 1892, ran unsuccessfully for county superintendent of schools as a Democrat. She returned to Iowa for more formal training in education, and in 1896 received a bachelor's of philosophy and a normal school diploma from Cornell College in Iowa. Staves returned to Montana, settling in Helena, and taught at Montana Wesleyan University. She soon became dissatisfied with teaching and decided to study law. She read law and worked as stenographer for Helena attorney Ella Knowles Haskell from 1899 to 1900. Adelaide Staves became active in the women's suffrage movement during her stay in Helena and served as secretary of the local organization. She also was active in other political activities which encouraged women's participation in community affairs. In January 1902, she married Herman E. Reeder, also a Cedar Rapids native and a compositor for The Helena Independent.
