Biographical / Historical
William Chumasero and Walter F. Chadwick formed the law firm of Chumasero and Chadwick in 1868. The partners handled the affairs of many large corporations and mines in the Helena, Montana Territory, area including the Bald Butte Mine. William Chumasero, a native of England, was admitted to the New York Bar in 1839. The young lawyer gradually made his way west, eventually reaching Helena in 1865. Chumasero died in 1893. New York was the birthplace of Walter F. Chadwick in 1836. Chadwick began his move west in 1859, spending time in several western states and territories before his arrival in Helena in 1866. Judge Chadwick left the firm of Chumasero and Chadwick in 1877, to serve in the Montana Territorial legislature. The two lawyers remained business associates, however, until Chadwick's death in 1885.
