Records. 1865-1943. .6 linear feet. The collection contains organizational and financial records of the Hebrew Benevolent Association. Included are two secretary's minute books, one containing a "Record of Persons Buried in the Jewish Cemetery, Helena, M.T." In addition, there is a monthly dues ledger and cash book.

Biographical / Historical
The first Hebrew Benevolent Association of Helena, Montana Territory, was organized December 3, 1866. The association listed 64 members by 1867; its officers that year were Sol Star, G. Goldberg, Isaac Haas, and Louis Gans. The association operated under a published constitution and bylaws which pledged the group to "...relieve the distressed and support the afflicted, attend the sick and bury the dead." The name, Hebrew Benevolent Society, was used informally by the members when referring to the association. Other names for the group included United Hebrew Benevolent Association (1890s-1906), First Jewish Benevolent and Cemetery Association (1907-1920s), and Home of Peace Cemetery Association (1929-1943).

Abstract
The Hebrew Benevolent Association of Helena was a Jewish society organized in Helena, Montana Territory, December 3, 1866. It operated as a charitable organization until the mid-1940s. Collection (1865-1943) consists of secretary's minute books, a record of burials in the Jewish Cemetery (later known as the Home of Peace Cemetery), and a monthly dues register.
