Scope and Contents

The collection contains a letterpress volume of outgoing correspondence (1887-1888) consisting primarily of orders for store goods and enclosures of bank deposits. However, the correspondence also includes a detailed report on the financial condition of the Buskett Mercantile Company (March 27, 1888) and a report on the Penn Yan Mine (May 22, 1888). There is also a small amount of incoming correspondence from the Granite Mountain Mining Company regarding payment of wages (1888).

Biographical / Historical

In July 1887, the Buskett Mercantile Company was founded at Granite, Montana Territory, by William Chastine Buskett. Buskett's company functioned as a general mercantile business (replacing the Treveaille and Company Store). It also supplied wood and merchandise to the Granite Mountain Mining Company on contract and served as its unofficial paymaster and banker. William C. Buskett also owned a large share in the Penn Yan Mine, located north of Wickes, Montana, in Jefferson County.

Abstract

The Buskett Mercantile Company, located in a Granite, Montana, was a general mercantile firm, and supplied wood and merchandise to the Granite Mountain Mining Company. Collection includes outgoing letterpress book (1887-1888) and incoming correspondence (1888) from the Granite Mountains Mining Company (1888). Also included are a report on the Penn Yan Mine (May 22, 1888).
