Content Description

Two cashbooks. One for Dahler, Armstrong & Co. (1874-1876) for their store in Glendale, MT and a second ledger for the Dahler & Largey Store at Iron Rod, MT (1877-1878). Both volumes reflect sales made at their stores in the community as well as expenses related to the mining operations ran by the companies in those communities.

Biographical / Historical

Charles L. Dahler was a prominent Montana Pioneer. Mr. Dahler lived first in Virginia City, Montana at 106 Wallace Street, the house remains there to this day. Mr. Dahler lived in Helena from 1885 to 1910, and built his own home at 212 W 8th. At the time of his death he was operating the Iron Rod Mine at Silver Star, with two sons. Mr. Dahler died aboard a train that malfunctioned; the story of the accident was written in the Whitehall News. It is unknown whether the Miner uprisings contributed to the accident. As a young man Mr. Dahler was very industrious. From 1860 to 1862, Mr. Dahler was agent for Ben Holliday's Overland Stage Line, which became Wells Fargo. For a short time, he lived in the Denver, Colorado area. In 1863 he arrived in Virginia City from Salt Lake. He became associated with Warren Hussey in the banking firm of Hussey, Dahler & Company. When Mr. Hussey went bankrupt, his shares were given over to Mr. Dahler. Mr. Dahler also partnered with Noah Armstrong and others, namely the Largey Family in his endeavors to create the Hecla Mining Company. The "Company" was known as Dahler, Armstrong, and Company.

Dahler, Armstrong & Co. operated a smelter in Glendale, MT. It began in the spring of 1874 in the Brysant Mining District.

Dahler & Largey ran a mill at Iron Rod, MT beginning in the 1860s.
