Content Description
Al Furstnow Saddlery Co. records (1906-1907 bulk dates). The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence from individuals from across the U.S. West (including but not limited to Montana, Wyoming, Texas, and New Mexico). Most correspondence are orders for saddles. Many describe the design and dimentions sought for the saddle.
There are also a number of completed order forms, advertisement material, and bills.

Biographical / Historical
Al Furstnow was born right around 1862 in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. He learned the saddlery business from his father and worked for Collins' Saddlery in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1881. He originally came to Miles City, MT in 1883 before bouncing between Nebraska, Wyoming, and California. Around 1892 he returned to Miles City to work for Robbins and Lenoir. His saddlery grew to become the only major saddlery between Billings, MT and Dickinson, ND. He eventually handed the store over to his son-in-law. Al Furstnow retired in California where he passed away sometime around 1925. Al Furstnow Saddlery Co. remained in business until 1982.
