The Gold Reserve Mining Company (now known as Gold Reserve, Inc.) has a history in mining dating back to 1956 and was originally formed for the purpose of acquiring, exploring, and developing mining properties and placing them into production. The company operated mines and mills and also explored for and drilled for oil and gas. Originally, the company owned 35 patented gold mining claims, includign mil sites and a fractional interest in 7 patented gold mining claims, located in the southeast edge of the Little Rocky Mountains, near Zortman in Phillips County, Montana, commonly known as the "Ruby" claim.
